Premium Banking Benefits in Mexico: Service and Security Perks Matter Most to Customers
Premium banking programs in Mexico earn their status with a lengthy list of customer perks like exclusive branches, health benefits, travel privileges, preferential event access, and more.
When budget season comes around, the CX and strategy leaders of these programs likely have two big questions: which benefits do premium customers say they’ve actually experienced, and which ones do they say are genuinely valuable?
Using NPS Prism’s journey-level analytics, we looked at benefit offerings across six major Mexican banks to see which ones are most important to customers, and where the gaps between what customers experience and what they value show up.
Customers value service and security-enhancing benefits over exclusive offers and lifestyle perks
The benefits customers value most aren't necessarily the ones that tend to anchor marketing for premium banking programs. Exclusive contact channels, special discounts, and preferential event sales are often promoted to signify status or signal cost savings, but they land in the bottom of the value ranking, between 61% and 68%.
Across six major consumer banks, security and protection (fraud monitoring, purchase protection, extended warranties) emerged as the most-valued benefit to premium customers (78%). Consumers value the everyday risk reduction offered by premium banking programs over exclusive discounts or events.
Wait times and dedicated staff within branches and call centers matter more to customers than exclusive communication channels. These benefits reduce friction within existing branches and call centers, rather than adding another contact channel they need to use to meet their needs. For CX and strategy leaders, incremental investment in these everyday offerings is likely to pay off fastest.
The benefits that banks invest in aren't always aligned with the ones customers value

Knowing what customers value industry-wide is only half the picture. The other half is whether your bank is actually delivering on these benefits, and how that compares to your competitors.
Prism’s latest data from six major banks in Mexico shows uneven delivery against these priorities. Some benefits are well-covered, while others lag far behind what customers value. Respectively, 42% and 34% of customers reported experiencing “preferential waiting lines” and “security & protection” as part of their premium benefits, making these two of the most experienced benefits on average.
But with only a 10-point spread between the leader and laggard for security and protection, there’s room for a bank to differentiate itself competitively through their fraud and purchase protection offerings.
Across the board, customers find their access to exclusive managers, cashiers, or ATMs in branches to be lacking, despite these benefits’ high value. Only 18% of customers across these six major banks reported experiencing this perk, pointing to another strategic opportunity for brand differentiation.
Areas also emerged where banks are likely investing more resources than justified by customer value. On average, 40% of customers report receiving special fees and discounts on banking services, despite being one of the lowest-ranked benefits in value. The costs associated with offering these special fees and discounts may not be delivering a return in the form of customer satisfaction.
Prioritize benefit value over benefit breadth
Premium banking is one of the more mature, high-stakes segments in Mexican retail banking, and the benefit portfolios are converging fast. A long list of high-value perks isn't a strategy if customers don't rate the ones you're best at delivering as the ones that matter most, or if the rest of the market is doing meaningfully better on those benefits.
By focusing on delivering exceptional everyday service and protection to premium banking customers, banks can satisfy customers without driving up operating costs related to exclusive programs, events, and discounts.
